SFP EXCLUSIVE

According to a reliable source (well maybe not that reliable but who cares this ain’t CNN), the guy who punched Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen in the face outside a South Bend restaurant was in fact teammate Golden Tate’s brother. Neither guy will be playing for Charlie Weis’ replacement next year but it’s still intriguing and always nice when the ‘Dise can actually break a story.

Top 5 Theories

as to what caused Tiger Woods to crash into a fire hydrant and a tree at 2:30 in the morning in front of his house going less than 30 mph without alcohol as a factor

resized_rachelcover1

5. Police cover-up. This wouldn’t be the first time cops chose not to breathalyze a high-profile celebrity, especially one that can get them tee times. Generally middle-of-the-night car accidents right in front of one’s house are a direct result of being drunk.

4. He is covering for his wife. The car hit a fire hydrant AND a tree??? All while going less than 30 mph??? If that doesn’t scream “woman driver!” I don’t know what does.

3. The car accident was staged. Maybe Mrs. Woods beat him with a 9-iron because of his alleged fling and he felt like a minor car crash would explain his facial lacerations.

2. NBD. He got in a minor argument with his loving wife over false accusations of an affair and he decided to quickly leave his property when pain medications hindered his vision and caused him to crash.

1. He just has a case of the shanks. Catching it on the hosel, moving his head, laying it off…you know, the chili-dippers. Or maybe it’s because he’s half Asian. Not saying, just saying.

Stuff Everyone Should Know

Associated Press — After a weekend when all the national championship contenders stayed undefeated, the BCS standings were unchanged.

Florida was first, Alabama second and Texas third Sunday.

Poll Positions

The top five of the BCS standings released Sunday:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
For complete BCS standings, and AP and USA Today polls, click here.

The Gators will play in the Southeastern Conference championship Saturday for one spot in the BCS national title game. The Longhorns can earn the other spot with a victory against Nebraska in the Big 12 title game.

The BCS bids go out next Sunday.

Hoping for a Texas loss are fourth-place TCU, which finished its regular-season 12-0, and fifth-place Cincinnati (12-0), which can boost its ranking by beating Pittsburgh for the Big East championship.

Sixth-place Boise State (12-0) will be rooting for Texas. The Broncos play New Mexico State and likely need the Longhorns to win to ensure themselves an at-large BCS berth.

Florida had an easy time running its record to 12-0, beating rival Florida State 37-10 on Saturday.

Earlier in the week, Alabama and Texas had to struggle to get to 12-0. The Crimson Tide rallied late to beat Auburn 26-21 and the Longhorns won a wild 49-39 game against Texas A&M.

Now all three are a victory away from a date in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 7 with the national championship on the line.

It’s practically a repeat of last season’s championship weekend, when Florida and Alabama played what amounted to a national semifinal in Atlanta and Oklahoma needed to win the Big 12 title to advance to the national championship game.

The Gators and Sooners ended up in the national championship game, with Florida winning its second title in three seasons.

If Texas loses at Cowboys Stadium to Nebraska, expect a furious debate about who should play in the national title game against the SEC champion.

TCU (.8689) and Cincinnati (.8547) are virtually tied in the standings. The Horned Frogs are ahead of the Bearcats in the two polls, but Cincinnati has a stronger computer rating.

Beating Pittsburgh could push the Bearcats past TCU and put them in position to take advantage of a Texas loss and slip into the national title game.

That is, unless the loser of the SEC championship game doesn’t stay ahead of the pack and set up a rematch between Florida and Alabama in Pasadena, Calif.

There has never been a regular-season rematch in the BCS title game nor a matchup of teams in the same conference.

In 2006, Florida leaped past Michigan in the final BCS standings to prevent a rematch of Ohio State-Michigan in the national title game. The Gators went on to beat the Buckeyes and win their first title under coach Urban Meyer.

What can I say, I like to look out for my readers. There is nothing worse than being at a bar and listening to a guy who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Pats-Saints Fantasy Preview

Writing a fantasy football preview for a Patriots-Saints Monday Night Game is like writing a “Who’s Hot/Who’s Not?” column for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. You pretty much can’t go wrong with whoever takes the field. The over/under for tomorrow night’s contest is currently at 57, and just about everybody thinks that this will be a shootout of epic proportions. I personally don’t think it will live up to the hype offensively, mostly because of two overlooked and underrated defenses. The Saints have only allowed 9 touchdown passes this season, tops in the NFC, while the Pats are 2nd in the AFC in yards allowed. That said…

Sit

New England Defense
New Orleans Defense

Start

Everybody you normally would. Tom Brady, Randy Moss and Drew Brees are must-starts even if you play in a 2-team league, while Wes Welker has turned himself into a no-brainer starter. Marques Colston is still Brees’ top target, while Lucky Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush will get their respective touches and finish in the neighborhood of 10 fantasy points each.

Sleepers

Robert Meachem has emerged as a red zone target with 4 TDs in his last 3 games. With the Patriots focused on Colston and the running game he could take advantage of single coverage when they’re close to paydirt. Laurence Maroney has finally emerged as a featured back and is a decent fantasy starter for the first time since his rookie season. He has scored in his last 5 games, netting 6 TDs and a 71 yard average over that span. Finally, if you’re desperate you can start Jeremy Shockey against a defense with a poor history defending tight ends.

Now, I was going to go with a typical Thanksgiving theme, (Turducken division, stuffing, Indians after smallpox, etc) but I’m pretty sure I did that last year. And you didn’t really think I was going to miss Miley Cyrus’ 17th birthday, did you?

Monday Funday Pats-Jets Links

APTOPIX Jets Patriots Football
As seen on the NFL.com Blog Blitz.

It wasn’t as much of a blowout as I was hoping for, but at least it shut the Jets up for a few days. I will give Darrelle Revis credit, though. The guy defends Randy Moss as well as anybody. Too bad Rex Ryan focused all his energy on stopping 81 and forgot about 83. Seriously, can somebody just carve Wes Welker’s name into the team MVP trophy already? The guy does not have an off button. He had twice as many catches as the entire Jets receiving corps. And how about The Golden Boy Mark Sanchez? I heard he was throwing balls out the window of the team bus as they were leaving Foxboro and hitting fans right in the numbers because they were wearing Patriots jerseys.

I’ll keep the links quick and businesslike in honor of Welker.

Leading off as usual, we have Jerry Thornton from Barstool Sports and Mike Reiss on ESPNBoston.

The Boston Globe’s Tony Massarotti and Bob Ryan both wrote about Wes Welker, at the risk of being repetitive, which they were.

Dan Shaughnessy couldn’t find anything negative to write about the Pats game so he focused on the demise of Northeastern University’s football program. If the Patriots keep winning, he will be writing retrospectives about Brookline High School’s inept offense by late December.

The NY Times’ George Bretherton is already calling for a QB change. Didn’t Sanchez win the Super Bowl in Week 2? That has to buy him at least a full season, right?

Ron Borges’ Best & Worst from the Boston Herald Of course, he still managed to rip on Belichick for going 0-2 in challenges. But that’s Ron Borges, putting the “Worst” in “Best & Worst” since 1924.

Finally, Thomas George puts the nail in the Jets’ coffin on Fanhouse.

Now that the crying routine didn’t work for Ryan, do you think he has a back-up plan? They have lost 6 of 7 and basically need to win out to make the playoffs. Good thing they won that Week 2 Super Bowl or the season would really be a failure.
