The Super Bowl to March Madness time period is my sports fan off-season. I still watch some college hoops and a Celts game here or there, but I usually take these 5-6 weeks to rejuvenate. In addition, I am 4 days into my annual weight loss competition where diet and exercise take the place of beer, wings and football. It’s not my favorite time of the year but it’s certainly necessary. St. Patty’s day falls the Wednesday before the 1st Thursday of March Madness, so I’m planning on taking 3 days off and putting all the weight back on.

During the off-season I typically focus on TV more than usual, which is why a lot of my columns will be about LOST, 24 and, yes, American Idol.

Bear with me.

Thanks.

Ashley Rodriguez is still my pick (after 8 minutes of Day 1 of auditions) but there are a few other idol hopefuls that I like. Didi Benami is a poor man’s Blake Lively who did well with one of Kara’s songs Tuesday night and definitely has the sweet background (emotional waitress) and look to carry her into the Top 24. Not sure she has the pipes to back it up though.

The performance of the week goes to Andrew Garcia, for his bold rendition of Paula Abdul’s Straight Up. I like him to go far as well.
